She Learned the Language Better Than Me
When I studied German in high school, it took me three years to reach a moderate level of fluency. I had a good teacher and studied hard, but I still didn’t learn the language nearly as well as my friend who had an opportunity to learn german in germany. She was an exchange student for a year, and when she came back she could speak German so well that she could strike up a conversation with a native German anywhere. Even as hard as I worked, I didn’t feel comfortable doing that. I could talk about a few things, but there was always a point in the conversation when I didn’t know how to say what I wanted to say. She never had that problem.
